Results by Outcome: High Schools

Over the past 14 years, IRRE has worked with 53 high schools and 14 middle schools in 11 states. Due to limitations in available data, only six of our partner districts are represented in the information on this page. Nonetheless, these results give you an idea of how First Things First impacts student outcomes. All results summarized here are based on publicly available data.

English/Language Arts/Reading Achievement measured on State Assessments

Across six districts serving more than 25,000 predominantly poor and minority students, meaningful improvements on test scores in English/language arts/reading have been achieved. Students in these districts achieved the gains represented here even though 11 of the 15 comprehensive high schools had been implementing FTF strategies for less than three years. Specifically, the number of students scoring at proficient or higher on state assessments increased by 15% after they began implementing FTF strategies. Said differently, almost 4,000 more students in these schools were scoring at these higher levels after implementation.

Mathematics Achievement measured on State Assessments

Across the same six districts, students have made dramatic gains in mathematics. Even though five of the six districts (11 of 15 comprehensive high schools) had been implementing FTF strategies for less than three years, the number of students scoring at or above proficiency on their state math assessment increased by 20%. Said differently, approximately 4,900 more students in these schools were scoring at these higher levels than had been before FTF was introduced.
