Dramatic Improvement
Across all studies of First Things First, one clear finding stands out: when struggling secondary schools implement its’ core strategies with fidelity, meaningful improvement occurs in student achievement and commitment within two years of implementation, and dramatic improvement can be seen within three years.
Findings come from independent research organizations and academic scholars who have collected and analyzed data on First Things First for over a decade. Methodologies have ranged from careful and highly detailed qualitative studies to rigorous, quantitative research using quasi-experimental designs. Evaluators have used the lenses of their backgrounds in education, psychology, sociology, economics and political science. IRRE’s own research department regularly taps into publically available data sources to assemble and report the most current and relevant trends in student outcomes for our district and school partners.
