First Things First Framework
The FTF framework includes:
- Student and school outcomes.
- Critical features essential to improve those outcomes.
- Specific strategies for putting the critical features in place.
- Structured processes for planning, capacity-building, and continuous improvement.
All elements are displayed below in graphic form.
The outcomes sought by First Things First are:
- For students: improved academic performance and commitment and graduation from
high school, college-ready.
- For schools:
- Respectful, long-standing and mutually accountable relationships among school staff, students and families;
- Effective instructional practices that engage students in their own education and that are driven by high, clear and fair academic and behavioral standards in every classroom every day; and
- Alignment of policies and resources - time, money, people and facilities - to support the first two school outcomes.
To improve these outcomes, FTF seeks to put in place seven critical features using
three specific strategies:
small learning communities, a Family Advocate System and
instructional improvement. The processes that support effective planning
and implementation of these strategies form the core of IRRE's technical assistance.
